Project Description
LOCATION: Atlantic City, New Jersey
Description
From the dramatic, imposing entry wall inscribed with “Arbeit Macht Frei”, visitors descend a wooden-planked ramp echoing camp railroad siding “selection” sites. Upon turning visitors come face-to-face with anthropomorphic representations of camp prisoners. Lighted spaces left between the sculpted figures symbolize & memorialize those victims who never left the camps. Finally, flags lining the beach-facing side honor all victims devastated by the Holocaust while overhanging a meditation/contemplation area. Visitors ascend out of the Memorial viewing the flags of Israel & the United States, emerging transformed by the experience.
